Disease. Racism. Patriarchy. Homophobia. Poverty.
There are a lot of things in the world to feel angry about. And, if you’re like many people and are upset about these types of issues listed above, then you’re probably spending a bit of time angry at the world.
This is no way to live.
What to do when you’re angry at the world
Let’s be clear, we don’t want to downplay the severity of these issues. It is good to have a righteous anger at injustice, and it is good to want to find solutions to these problems. However, constantly living in a fuming, hateful anger can be bad for your mental and physical health.
Mentally, being angry can be exhausting and can lead to hopelessness and stress. And stress takes a physical toll on the body, leaving us feeling tired or having headaches and high blood pressure.
When we’re angry at the world, we need to sit down and seriously reflect. What is it exactly that makes us angry? How should we be processing this? Is there anything we can do?
Often, what makes people angry are things they have no direct control over. In these circumstances, we need to learn how to sit still, reflect and process:
- Identify what makes you angry.
- Identify how the anger affects you.
- Refuse to fall into the same habits you normally do when angry.
- Use your anger as a reminder of your need for God and hope.
- Ask God to help you process the anger and move on to be part of the solution.
- Accept that there may be an issue you struggle against your whole life, but that you can be part of the working solution.
