You’re sitting in your car at a stoplight, trying to keep your eyes straight forward because if you don’t make eye contact, you don’t have to give him money. Or, you weave in and of cars on your way back to your car in the Walmart parking lot, hoping to avoid the lady selling handmade bracelets. Perhaps, you’ve never really thought about helping or maybe the whole situation gives you the heebie jeebies. But, what if those people just need a little money to buy their next meal? Or, what if you were in their shoes? How would you want to be treated?
When it comes to the poor, Jesus had a lot to say. Are you wondering what did Jesus say about the poor yet? If so, keep reading.
Jesus calls us to love all and unconditionally. He also asks us to care for those who are in need. In fact, Jesus tells us that “Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses” (Proverbs 28:27).
Here are some other things that Jesus said about the poor:
 

• “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” — 1 John 3:17

• “Give generously to [the poor] and do so without a grudging heart, then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.” — Deuteronomy 15:10-11

• “It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.” — Proverbs 14:21

 
What did Jesus say about the poor? He said to love them and help them. Jesus goes as far as to say that those who turn a blind eye to the poor will be cursed, but those who give and do so graciously will be blessed. The next time you see someone in need, offer to help. Maybe you don’t feel comfortable handing out cash, but ask if you can buy them groceries or a hot meal. Just remember to show compassion to those in need.
