Should Christians get involved in politics?

Bryant Golden Blog

When you picture the areas of greatest divide in the United States, politics is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. This is largely in part due to the fact that we practically have a two-party system and most Americans fall on one side or the other.

As Christians, we should be seeking to encourage peace and building bridges, not sowing division, so does this mean Christians should not be involved in politics? Of course not! But there are some things Christians need to keep in mind.

It’s OK to disagree

Creating peace does not mean you have to agree with everyone. It is OK to disagree with others, and in fact, we should! If someone is advocating for something that is morally wrong or against the law, Christians can and should take a stance against it. However, what we are not supposed to do is make enemies of these people and let our emotions control us.

Christians can disagree with political opponents, but they should never hate or advocate for violence against them.

The Gospel is political

The Gospels introduced a new way of thinking that shaped the religious and political institutions of the time and throughout history ever since. While the Gospels should not be used as a political tool or to manipulate political power, it is important for us to remember that it inspired political movements that changed the world.

Love all, serve all

Christians involved in politics on any level need to remember that, above all else, every human is loved by God and made in His image. We are called to love all of them like we love ourselves. When a Christian holds a role in politics, it is imperative that they remember that they are there to serve all of their constituents, not just the ones who voted for them or whose views are more in line with their own.
