Making peace with your past means accepting your own imperfections and seeing who you are through God’s eyes. Sometimes it is easier to forgive others than to forgive yourself. In fact, making peace with yourself can be downright impossible when you are holding on to “stuck” points.
Shame is not of God
Guilt motivates us to do and be better, but shame is sticky. Guilt points out a mistake and a better direction; it points us to God’s love and does not condemn. Shame is a pit we fall down that tells us we are unworthy and there is nothing better.
The truth is that when God sees you, He sees Christ. We are all broken and in need of a savior. Your past failures are merely evidence that you, like everyone else, are human. You and I are called to leave the grave!
Peace is from God
We are called to let the “peace of God rule” in our hearts (Colossians 3:15 NKJV). This isn’t easy, but necessary. In order to do this, we have to make peace with our imperfect past; we must learn to forgive ourselves.
Perhaps you’ve already tackled Jonah’s plight and learned to extend grace to others, but you struggle with giving yourself the same. Life is sticky and messy. Thankfully there is good news. The same lessons we have in learning to keep peace with others are given to us to hold on to and apply to ourselves. No matter how far you think you are from God, He is already with you and for you. He is waiting for you to wrap yourself in the truth of who He is and what He offers.
God is waiting for you to see yourself as one of His beloved.
What are you waiting for? It’s time to take a fresh look in the mirror and understand that your past has been forgiven through the work of Jesus.
