If you’re familiar with Jesus at all, hopefully you have heard about His sacrifice on the cross. Jesus, quite literally, died on the cross to set each and every person free from sin. That means because Jesus, who lived a pure and blameless (and sinless) life, sacrificed himself in our place so that we weren’t destined to go to Hell if we chose to follow Him.
Really think about that. There’s a David Crowder Band song called “How He Loves Us” that’s a great example of just how deep Christ’s love for his. One of the verses reads, “He is jealous for me, Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree, Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.”
Wow. That’s incredible. Now that you’re thinking about the cross, you may be wondering, “What did Jesus say on the cross?”
Jesus didn’t say much. Let’s dig a little deeper, though. Just in case the actual crucifixion wasn’t a brutal enough way to die, Jesus was paraded through the streets while being forced to carry his own cross. He was also severely beaten, receiving a horrible lashing that literally tore his skin from his body. Then, Jesus was nailed to a cross for everyone to watch as he slowly died.
Put yourself in Jesus’ shows. How would you be feeling? What thoughts would you have toward your father, who is also God? Jesus, who was both fully man and fully God (a bit confusing, we know), felt everything and had normal, human emotions. But, Jesus spoke seven times from the cross. He said:

• “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” – Luke 23:34
• Jesus asked God to forgive those who were putting Him through such pain and suffering.
  
• “Trust, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” – Luke 23:43
  This reference is in response to the two thieves, one of whom asked for forgiveness in his last moments.
  
• “Woman, this is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “This is your mother.” – John 19:26-27
  Here, Jesus relinquishing the care of His mother to his disciple.
• “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” – Mark 15:34
  Jesus spoke these words after being on the cross for about 9 hours. It is surmised that He felt the full weight of the world’s sin at this point, feeling separated from God.
  
• “I thirst.” – John 19:28
• “It is finished.” – John 19:30
  This is one of the last sayings of Jesus on earth. He is essentially noting that the price for sin has been paid in full.
• “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.” – Luke 23:46

Just moments before his death, Jesus speaks these words.
